Oysters...Recessionary Food?

A friend from class told me about a ridiculous happy hour special at Lure Fishbar: $1 oysters, clams and half price on many other seafood specialties. We've been trying to go for some time now, but it's always been too crowded to get a seat. Oysters are a bit hard to eat standing up. But this past Friday, the 13th, we got lucky and scored a table after class. The restaurant is below ground and has an intimate ambiance with large banquettes, small tables and a long bar. Perfect for a date or casual dinner/drinks with friends.

We ordered 20 oysters and this lovely platter came out. Not sure what kind of oysters they are, but at $1 a piece, who really cares?? They were fresh and served with lemons, mignonette sauce, cocktail sauce and Tabasco, upon request. Both Diana and I recognized the ingredients of the mignonette sauce right away (same as Bearnaise, but without the Hollandaise!) Never eat with culinary school students if you don't like your food dissected. :)

I'm a firm believer that most food that comes in a shell can be paired with french fries. The fries were crispy, salty, warm and complemented the oysters perfectly. I recognized the fries as pont-neuf size and both Diana and I thought the mayonnaise was not homemade. We were not completely sure about that though. I love applying all the knowledge I've learned outside the classroom. Eating out has never been so fun!
