It's that time again! Restaurant Week NYC. I'm usually passive aggressive about RW. I sorta want to take the opportunity to check out places I haven't been before at a slightly cheaper price but at the same time, I fully believe food and service during RW doesn't do any restaurant justice. I've been to many RW dinners and haven't been blown away by most.
On Tuesday, I checked out Resto with some friends. Overall, it was not a good experience. The restaurant was full, but the sound level was awful. I could hardly hear my dinner companions and my server could barely hear me. Service was S-L-O-W. I'm usually pretty patient with food, but this was unacceptable. No paying patron should wait 90 minutes between courses. Any restaurant should anticipate the increased business during RW and accommodate for it. A backed up kitchen is not an excuse. The server barely checked in at our table and was even slow delivering drinks. I had ordered a beer pairing with my dishes but drank most of the beers before my food even came out. What else are you suppose to do when you're waiting? To top it off, the food was so-so. If I'm going to wait that long and put up with bad service, I would at least like to have amazing food. Definitely won't be returning.
Tonight I went to Indochine, a discreet Vietnamese fusion place off of Astor Place. The decor is beautiful--very tropical and romantic. The service was great, the portions large and the cocktails delicious. The food was good, but not great. Overall, I think it's a great value. Not sure I'd return.
I think this may be it for me for RW although I've been craving steak...which is hard to resist since a $35 3-course steak dinner is a great deal!
